ELIZABETH TAN

Cello

Malaysian cellist Elizabeth Tan began her professional career with the Singapore Symphony. In 2010 she joined the Malaysian Philharmonic and in 2024 was appointed Assistant Principal Cello.

In 2007 Elizabeth took first prize at the HSBC Classics String Competition. Concerto appearances include Dvořák and Haydn C with Penang Philharmonic, Haydn D with Kamerata KL and NUS Symphony, and Elgar with the Malaysian Philharmonic Youth Orchestra and Orchestra of the Music Makers.

Elizabeth was part of Yong Siew Toh Conservatory’s inaugural cohort, graduating with first class honours under Li-Wei Qin and Nella Hunkins. In Singapore she has performed with More than Music and alongside the T'ang Quartet. With MPO colleagues she has presented chamber concerts in East and West Malaysia, Vietnam and Japan.

As teaching assistant to Li-Wei Qin at YSTCM, Elizabeth mentored undergraduates, taught with the Young Artist Programme and ran the Orchestral Excerpts class. She has given masterclasses for the Singapore International String Conference and Orchestra of the Filipino Youth. She is known for her work with the KL String Project and Malaysian Philharmonic Youth Orchestra, and finds great joy in supporting the next generation of young musicians.
